The 2024 National Carer Wellbeing Survey, led by Carers Australia and the University of Canberra, provides important insights into the experiences and wellbeing of carers across the country. Over 9,000 carers took part in the survey, including current and former carers. The findings show that wellbeing for many carers declined in 2023 and remained low in 2024. Carers were found to be 2.6 times less likely to report good or excellent health compared to other Australian adults. They also continue to experience higher rates of psychological distress than the general population.
However, the survey also found that support makes a difference. Employed carers were more likely to report healthy wellbeing (45.6%) compared to those who were unemployed (29.7%). Carers with supportive workplaces were significantly more likely to maintain positive wellbeing.
Carers shared some of the biggest challenges they face:
While many families take great pride in caring for their loved ones at home, the physical, emotional, and financial demands on primary carers can become overwhelming without adequate support. That’s why caring for the carer is just as important.
If you are the person normally providing day-to-day care, contact us to find out how we can support you in your own home. Our in-home respite services will give you a break and provide you with the opportunity to work or attend activities on your own, or complete errands confident in the knowledge that the person you care about is safe and in professional hands.
The survey found that 57.6% of carers reported consistently good respite care, 57.5% felt free to do what they wanted during the break, and 54% said they felt refreshed afterward, highlighting the positive impact respite services can have on carer wellbeing.
However, many carers still face barriers when trying to access respite care:
CareChoice provides in-home respite support so that carers can take a well-earned break from their caring responsibilities.
This time could include a long walk or hike, a picnic in the park with friends, a swim, or a coffee and some uninterrupted reading time. Or a carer may prefer to use the time to attend personal appointments.
Our respite services can be arranged casually, on a regular basis, or in an emergency. We can provide support workers on weekdays, weekends, evenings, overnight or even 24-hour support. We do require a minimum booking of four hours.
As a Victorian service provider, we have support workers across Melbourne, Geelong, Ballarat, Bendigo, Mornington Peninsula, and the Latrobe Valley.
We will work with you to ensure that each support worker is suitably matched to the individual needs of your loved one. We’re committed to ensuring a positive and engaging experience for the person receiving respite support.
